Download Super Mario Galaxy WII ROM [Latest]
Updated version
Updated version
Two different people search for a way to download Super Mario Galaxy. One wants the game on a Switch tonight. The other has a Wii disc in a drawer, no working Wii, and a laptop or a phone that could run it better than the original console ever did.
This post covers both, then spends most of its length on the second group, because that is where the actual work is. Dolphin setup on Windows, macOS and Android, the controller problem Galaxy creates, and the two game specific fixes that are documented and that almost nobody applies. If your search history is a mix of super mario galaxy download and download super mario wii, you are in the second group.
Scope note: written against Dolphin 2606a. The game file comes from a disc you own. This post does not name ROM sources and carries no frame rate numbers, because the hardware in front of you is not the hardware in front of me.
The fastest legitimate super mario galaxy download
Since 2 October 2025, both Galaxy games are on the Nintendo eShop. Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 sell for 39.99 USD each, with a two game bundle at 69.99 USD. Regional pricing applies.
That version runs at 1080p docked, 4K on Switch 2 after a free update, and adds Assist Mode plus extra Storybook chapters. If you own a Switch, stop reading and buy it. It is ten minutes from purchase to playing.
The emulator route below exists for people who own the Wii disc and no longer own a working Wii, and for anyone who wants the game at a resolution the 2007 hardware could not output.
What you need before you install anything
Three things, and only one of them is software.
A disc image dumped from your own copy. Dolphin ships no games and downloads none. The project documents the process in its official ripping games guide, which needs a Wii or a Wii U in Wii mode with the Homebrew Channel, CleanRip, and an SD card or USB drive with room for a 4.7 GB image. People searching download super mario wii are usually looking for exactly this file, and the honest answer is that it comes off your own disc or nowhere.
Dolphin itself, from dolphin-emu.org. Rebuilt packages on APK mirrors and download portals carry malware often enough that the official build is the only sane choice, and the project publishes its own Android version.
Hardware with some headroom. Galaxy leans on single thread CPU performance more than its 2007 release date suggests. A modern laptop handles it. A budget phone from three years ago will struggle regardless of your settings.
Windows setup
Install the 64 bit Visual C++ redistributable for Visual Studio 2022 first. The Windows build of Dolphin will not launch without it, and the error it throws does not say so clearly.
Put your disc image in a permanent folder, something like D:\Games\Wii. Not Downloads, and not the SD card you dumped to, because Dolphin stores the path rather than the file.
Open Dolphin, click Config, open the Paths tab, click Add, select that folder. Turn on Search Subfolders only if your games sit in per game folders. Close the window and the list populates. If it stays empty, press F5.
Set the graphics backend to Vulkan, or Direct3D 12 if your driver misbehaves with Vulkan. Set Internal Resolution to 2x for a 1080p display or 3x for 1440p. Galaxy came out at 480p, so 2x is already a large jump in clarity.
macOS setup
Dolphin needs macOS Big Sur 11 or later and runs natively on Apple Silicon. Take the universal build from the official download page and drag it to Applications.
Set the graphics backend to Metal. This is the important difference from Windows. Vulkan on macOS runs through a translation layer and Metal does not, so Metal is the one you want on any Mac.
Everything else matches Windows. Config, Paths, Add, select your games folder, refresh. Gatekeeper will complain on first launch because the build is not from the App Store, and you clear that in System Settings under Privacy and Security.
Android setup
Grab the official Android build from the same download page. Dolphin needs a 64 bit device on Android 5.0 or later, and the recent releases have real optimisation work behind them.
Folder access works differently here because of scoped storage. You cannot type a path. Tap the add button on the main screen and grant Dolphin access to your games folder through the Android system picker. If the list comes up empty, the permission is what failed, not the file.
Set the backend to Vulkan. Set Internal Resolution to 1x and raise it only after you have played a full galaxy at full speed. Phone GPUs cope with resolution scaling less gracefully than desktop ones, and Galaxy pushes the CPU side harder than most Wii games anyway.
The touchscreen doubles as the Wii Remote pointer on Android, and for a game built around pointing at star bits that works better than it sounds.
The controller problem, and how Galaxy actually plays
This is where most emulator attempts at Galaxy fall apart, and the reason is structural. The game wants a Wii Remote and a Nunchuk. Not one or the other.
In Dolphin, open Controllers, set Wii Remote 1 to Emulated Wii Remote, then open its configuration and set the Extension to Nunchuk. Miss that step and the game sits at the connect your Nunchuk screen forever while you check every button mapping you own.
Three inputs carry the whole game. The pointer collects star bits and grabs Pull Stars. A shake performs the spin attack, which you map to a button or a stick flick under motion simulation. Crouch and long jump come off the Nunchuk stick and its buttons.
A real Wii Remote through Bluetooth passthrough is the accurate route, and it needs a compatible adapter plus a sensor bar or two candles for the infrared source. Mouse pointer on desktop is the practical route and it is fine. Touch pointer on Android is better than a gamepad stick for this specific game.
Two Galaxy fixes that are documented and rarely applied
Star bit collection causing slowdown is a known one. The cause is the Wii Remote speaker emulation, and the fix is in the controller configuration window: untick Enable Speaker Data. Dolphin's own game wiki has carried this note for years and it is still the first thing to try when the game hitches every time you sweep up a pile of star bits.
The other is a region and language mismatch. Older Dolphin builds would refuse to start Galaxy if the Wii system language did not match the game's region. Current builds match it automatically, and there is an Allow Mismatched Region Settings option under Config, General, that turns that behaviour off. If you have that option enabled and the game will not boot, turn it off first before you assume a bad dump. More game specific notes live on Dolphin's game wiki.
Troubleshooting
The game does not appear in the list. It is still inside a .zip or .7z file, or the folder path is wrong, or on Android the folder permission was never granted. Archives never show up.
The title cannot be booted. Almost always a bad dump. Right click the game, open Properties, use the Verify tab, and re dump if it fails.
Stutter the first time an effect appears, smooth afterwards. Shader compilation. In Graphics, Advanced, switch Shader Compilation to Hybrid Ubershaders.
The pointer drifts or feels loose. Emulated pointer sensitivity, not the game. Adjust it in the Wii Remote configuration rather than fighting it in play.
FAQ
Is there a free way to download Super Mario Galaxy? No legitimate one. It is not on Nintendo Switch Online, there is no demo, and any site advertising a free super mario galaxy download is distributing someone else's copy.
Can I play Super Mario Galaxy on a phone? Yes, through the official Dolphin Android build, with your own dump. It asks more of the CPU than most Wii games, so a mid range phone from the last two or three years is the realistic floor.
Do I need a Wii Remote? Not for the emulator. You need the Nunchuk extension enabled in Dolphin, and a pointer of some kind, which can be a mouse or a touchscreen.
What do people mean by download super mario wii? Usually the 2007 Wii release of Galaxy, sometimes New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Neither is sold digitally any more, so both come down to a disc.
Does Galaxy 2 need different settings? No. Same engine, same controller setup, same fixes. A profile built for the first game carries over.
Is Dolphin legal? The emulator is. Downloading game images you do not own is not. Dumping your own disc is the workflow the project documents.
Version note
Written September 2026 against Dolphin 2606a. Menu names shift slightly between releases. More emulator writing lives on the modfuze blog.
So the decision is narrow. If you want to download Super Mario Galaxy and play tonight, the Switch version costs 39.99 USD and asks nothing of you. If you own the disc and want it at 1440p with a mouse pointer, Dolphin gets you there in about forty minutes, and most of that is dumping the disc.
