Updated version

Ben 10: Protector of Earth was developed by High Voltage Software and published by D3 Publisher, released 30 October 2007 in North America and 9 November in Europe and Australia. PS2, PSP and DS shared that date, with the DS version handled by 1st Playable Productions.

It runs on High Voltage's own Quantum3 engine, the same technology the studio used on its Wii work. This was the first proper Ben 10 game, following only a HyperScan release that almost nobody played.

By November 2008 D3 was announcing 2.5 million units sold worldwide across platforms. For a licensed handheld and console title from that era, that is a large number, and it explains why three more games followed in four years.

The story

Vilgax has stolen DNA samples from the Omnitrix and scattered them. He wants to use them to destroy the world. Ben, Gwen and Grandpa Max take the Rust Bucket across five regions of the United States to get them back.

That is the whole plot, and its simplicity is the point. Each region ends with a boss from the show, and each boss returns a DNA sample, which unlocks an alien form. Four Arms, Heatblast, XLR8, Diamondhead and the rest arrive on that schedule rather than all at once.

The structure means your move set at hour one and your move set at hour four are different games. Early levels are melee and platforming with two forms. Later ones assume you can switch between a ranged attacker, a heavy hitter and something fast enough to cross a gap.

How it plays

Beat em up with light platforming and puzzle gates.

Ben walks the levels as himself and calls up alien forms through the Omnitrix, which runs on a timer and recharges. Power ups on the ground extend a form, grant brief invincibility, or speed up the recharge, which is a small system that changes how aggressively you play.

Each level hides three Sumo Slammer cards, the show's in universe trading card game, and finding them unlocks extras including video clips. Levels are graded on completion time with a Plumber rank, and an A rank unlocks character art of a boss or villain. Boss fights end in quick time events, which were everywhere in 2007 and are used lightly here.

Critical reception at the time was split down a clean line. Reviewers judging it as a children's action game called it well made and faithful to the source. Reviewers judging it as an action game full stop called it limited, easy and repetitive. Both were right, and which one applies to you depends on why you are playing.

How it holds up

Better than its sequels, for two reasons.

The alien roster is unlocked by progress rather than handed to you, so the game keeps introducing something new for most of its length. And the level design is built around each form having one obvious job, which means you rarely stand there wondering which power the room wants.

The weakness is variety of encounter. Enemy waves start repeating well before the last region, and the camera in tighter interior sections does not always keep up with a fight that has moved behind a wall.

Where a Protector of Earth file legitimately comes from

One place: a UMD you own, dumped by you, on hardware you own.

PPSSPP's own store listing says it directly. No games are included, you use your own real PSP games and turn them into ISO or CSO files. That is the supported path and the only one this site covers.

There is no modern digital release of this game on any storefront I can find, which makes a used UMD or PS2 disc the realistic legitimate route. Out of print is not the same as free to take, however long a game has been unavailable.

Emulator notes for a copy you already own

Verified against PPSSPP 1.20.4, the current stable build, released 16 May 2026.

Install the emulator from ppsspp.org or the Play Store listing. There is no BIOS to hunt for. PPSSPP recreates the PSP system software in code, which is why it works the moment you install it.

Set the graphics backend first, Vulkan on current Android hardware, OpenGL if the game will not draw. Push the internal resolution to 2x or 3x, which sharpens the cartoon outlines the art relies on. Leave texture upscaling off, because it softens the hand drawn interface elements.

Frame skipping stays at zero. The boss quick time events want a clean input window, and skipping frames is the fastest way to fail one for no reason.

What you should have now

A clear picture. Protector of Earth is the strongest of the licensed Ben 10 games, a short road trip beat em up with a real unlock curve, and it is showing its age mainly in enemy variety rather than in anything fundamental.

That is the Ben 10 Protector of Earth ROM PSP question answered from the useful end. More PSP era writing is on the blog.

Settings above reflect PPSSPP 1.20.4 on Android. The menus move between releases, so an option may have shifted by the time you read this.
